Advocating for inclusive, safe dining for college students with food restrictions
Scroll through the presentation slides to learn how to evaluate college dining services during your college search. You can also watch a video recording of this college talk. Although this presentation was prepared for a celiac teen meeting the approach would be consistent for students with any food allergies.
Clarification on Slide 18: Student Disability Services (SDS): Register on time
Our strong suggestion to register with Student Disability Services (SDS) on time is practical advice and not legal advice. Celiac disease is a disability and is legally covered under the ADA regardless of this registration. However, it is in your best interests to register with SDS to clearly define your required accommodations and increase the school’s accountability. Although you can register at any time, it is unlikely to expect housing accommodations, for example, if you have missed the housing accommodation deadline or time to make up work after gluten exposure, if you haven’t made arrangements ahead of time.
