Details About this Student's College Dining Experience
Does your college handle food restrictions as you expected when you decided to attend?
Somewhat what I expected
Have you had a reation from eating in your dining hall?
YES
If Yes, describe each incident and how your school responded
They tried to give me premade meals that I could pick up. Talking with the accommodations office and our food service staff is a huge part of advocating for yourself
Did you register your food restriction with the disabilities office? If yes, describe
Yes. I had many meetings with them from the moment I started at cuw. They aren’t great about the food part of it like trying to get housing accommodation but I have really good class accommodation that help when I am sick
Are there resources to help with nutritious, safe dining (e.g. dietician)? If yes, describe
They have a simple servings section that is all gluten free
If you were in charge of dining, what would you change? Would your school be open to suggestions?
Actually make the food gf I have a Nima sensor and tested a lot of the food over a semester, most of it came back positive. I think a gf pantry or section with not food they made would make a huge difference
Describe your biggest challenge managing your food restrictions at college and how you deal with it
Friends and eating out. Playing a college sport and trying to get meals for that. You know you are surrounded by people you care when you have many challenged like this and they work with you and they are willing to help. My lacrosse coach has place I can eat at and we are sent ordering forms in advanced
Advice for Incoming Students:
Housing:
Did your food restrictions impact your housing decisions? Any dorm recommendations
Ask for your own mini fridge. If they give you one ask for your own. Ask for appliances like an air fryer toaster. Make big demands and see what you can get. In room bathrooms are something you can get as an accommodation. It’s needed
Dining Halls:
Any advice for managing dining halls? Favorite dining halls? Any to avoid?
There is no harm in asking. You can’t be afraid to know what you need and ask for it. Be persistent and get what you need
Meal Plans:
Describe your meal plans over the year(s). What's mandatory? Any suggestions?
My advice is if it doesn’t work out you try it. A meal plan exemption is an option. It might not seem like it they may push you away from that. It might be a hell of a process to get it but you know what’s best for you and if that’s in your best interest do it. It will be worth it in the end
Dorms:
Any advice for eating in the dorms? Favorite snacks? Places that deliver?
I have frozen meals in my freezer. I always made breakfast in my room. I use my toaster and air fryer all the time. A microwave will save you. And I do a lot of DoorDash for food. Find a good grocery store near you
Getting Started:
What should students do before school starts or when they first arrive?
Reach out to accommodation services first thing. Know what you’re asking for is it a single room? In room bathroom? Mini fridge? Push for your needs not what they will give you. You can meet with dining you can meet with everyone be a pain in their ass till you get what you need
Socializing:
Advice on managing parties or dinners out with friends?
Be careful about drinks, a lot of things have malt and you don’t realize it. Check menues before, my friends always have me pick the restaurant and yah it gets boring sometimes always have to do it but it keeps me safe and that’s the most important. Download Find Me Gf, it’s a app for restaurants in the area with reviews
