Rationale for Grades Given

Ate at the avoiding gluten section of the dining hall exclusively and my doctor evaluated my antibody levels and symptoms and said it was like I was eating at a bread factory.

Lots of safe food in the DC area but not that many dedicated gluten free options and you hav to be willing to travel to get safe food.

Extremely: React to even small traces

Details About this Student's College Dining Experience

Does your college handle food restrictions as you expected when you decided to attend?

Not at all what I expected

Have you had a reation from eating in your dining hall?

YES

If Yes, describe each incident and how your school responded

I contacted the school and had a meeting with the head of dining and the head nutritionist but nothing was changed. I have had dining employees yell at me for asking for gloves changed or gluten free orders.

Did you register your food restriction with the disabilities office? If yes, describe

Yes I did and I now have a private kitchen in my dorm.

Are there resources to help with nutritious, safe dining (e.g. dietician)? If yes, describe

Yes a dietician but they are not helpful and do not understand allergies or celiac disease.

If you were in charge of dining, what would you change? Would your school be open to suggestions?

I would make sure the staff is educated on allergies and what contains gluten. Many things are mislabeled as gluten free. The school is not receptive, I have tried.

Describe your biggest challenge managing your food restrictions at college and how you deal with it

I can’t eat at any of the dining halls so I have to cook all my own food.
