Very limited gluten free options. They are also often out of their gluten free buns in their sub stations.
There are few selective gluten free restaurants around, but Chick-fil-A has some options.
Details About this Student's Food Restrictions
How many years ago were you diagnosed with food allergies or celiac disease?
1-3
If you indicated celiac or gluten intolerance, how sensitive are you to gluten?
Moderate: React sometimes
Add details to help us better understand your food restrictions (e.g. sensitivity level, potential reaction, need for EPI pen)
It is not a life-or-death situation, but each time I have gluten it tears up the lining in my small intestine and causes terrible stomach pain.
Details About this Student's College Dining Experience
Does your college handle food restrictions as you expected when you decided to attend?
Mostly what I expected
Have you had a reation from eating in your dining hall?
YES
If Yes, describe each incident and how your school responded
Severe stomach ache after eating at a certain station, most likely due to cross - contamination.
Did you register your food restriction with the disabilities office? If yes, describe
No
Are there resources to help with nutritious, safe dining (e.g. dietician)? If yes, describe
I am not aware of any dietitian for celiacs.
If you were in charge of dining, what would you change? Would your school be open to suggestions?
I would make each dining station have a safe gluten free area, rather than having it all at one station. If a student doesn’t like what is offered that day, they are out of luck.
Describe your biggest challenge managing your food restrictions at college and how you deal with it
Advocating for myself and speaking up when I need help. I have to remember that I do have special circumstances, and it’s okay to make it other people’s problem if it means I have something to eat.
Advice for Incoming Students:
Housing:
Did your food restrictions impact your housing decisions? Any dorm recommendations
I didn’t really take into consideration the location of the dining halls when I chose Hammons. I would recommend Blair-Shannon because it has the easiest access to the Delicious Without station in their dining hall.
Dining Halls:
Any advice for managing dining halls? Favorite dining halls? Any to avoid?
The staff are helpful if you’re willing to ask. My favorite is Blair-Shannon because they have a dedicated gluten free station and they switch it up every day, but Garst is nice because you can get takeaway food.
Meal Plans:
Describe your meal plans over the year(s). What's mandatory? Any suggestions?
Dorms:
Any advice for eating in the dorms? Favorite snacks? Places that deliver?
Getting Started:
What should students do before school starts or when they first arrive?
Before the first day of classes, find each building and walk through your schedule. This helps any nerves you may have on the first day.
