What stage are you in college?
Senior
Please describe your meal plan for each year there so far. Include if your school required any of these decisions. If you are eating in a greek house or other club type arrangement include that as well.
I had a full meal plan with unlimited swipes my first year. Currently get 75 dining all swipes and 300$ sparty cash to use on campus
How many years ago were you diagnosed with celiac?
1-3
How sensitive to gluten are you?
Very: React to small amounts
How would you describe the worst reaction you have had since diagnosis?
Hospitalized
Does your college handle celiac food restrictions as you expected they would when you selected your school?
Somewhat what I expected
Grade your college on feeding celiac students
B+
Explain your rationale for that grade
Some dining areas are more trained than others. And more recently they do not serve a wide variety of GF meals
Check all that apply
My school is large with many dining halls, Ability to feed me varies greatly across dining halls, I feel comfortable eating at any dining hall on campus, I frequent certain dining halls because they have more options although all are safe, I can find some but not enough food in any of the dining halls, I can't find any good options in the dining halls at all, Ability to eat well was a critical part of my college selection process, I asked alot of questions before I came but the reality was different
Did you register with your students disabilities office for accommodations? If yes, describe.
Yes. But not for my dietary needs
Are there resources (nutritionists, chefs, peer support groups) to help ensure you are receiving safe nutritious food? Describe
Yes. The chefs are typically always their to help you with any questions. They go above and beyond to make sure you can eat something in the hall besides salad. There is a nutritionists. She only guides you and cant do too much
How many times have you been glutenized in your dining hall?
More than 3
If you didn't select NONE, what happened and how did school respond?
My school never knew.
Describe your biggest celiac challenge at college and how you manage it
Making sure I get my meat protein when I eat out. Everything always seems to be breaded or marinated in something with gluten
If you were in charge of your school's dining, what changes would you implement to better feed celiac students? Would your school be open to these suggestions?
Also making sure to offer meat with a gluten free option. It's so simple to do that. Having all soups be gluten free. Only a couple tend to be. Offering dessert choices and not just udi cookies
Did celiac impact your housing decision? How? Is there a certain dorm you recommend for celiacs? Why?
Yes it did. Living on campus was the cheapest option including food. If I had lived off, I would have had to pay for my food separately which is costly.
Your advice to new celiac kids for managing the dining halls? Favorite dining hall(s)?
Brody has just so many options all the time. Holmes Hall often has a couple GF options. The chef at Holmes is really nice and he knows the struggle of having to eat GF from talking to so many students. The Union hall is also great for salads because they are loaded and you actually feel like you ate something
Your advice to new celiac kids for eating in the dorm? Favorite snacks? Places that deliver?
So many places deliver. Many of them offer GF options. The Sparty Markets have a very limited arrangement of GF snacks and food. From there I always just end up with junk. I prefer to go to 1855 market to shop for food for my dorm
Your advice to new celiac kids on preparing before they come? Or doing upon first arrival?
I would email the nutritionist all your concerns. She can help to some degree but she will guide you in a good direction and give you all the chefs contact info. She explains how the menus work and how to distinguish what is GF.
Your advice to new celiac kids on managing keg parties and alcohol scene?
Dont go to them.
Grade your college town area for celiac friendliness
A-
Favorite places to eat in town or food shop?
I really enjoy the Mexican restaurants around town. The best place to shop for food is the meijer. I am sure the soon to be target will be a great shopping location
